Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was not the first movie to bare the Final Fantasy name, but it was the first one to be released in theaters. First opening sometime in the Fall of 2001 (I can not find an exact date) in Japan and on July 11th, 2001 in America. The Spirits Within is a completely CG animated movie that takes place in the year 2065. The movie centers around Dr. Aki Ross and a team of Solders known as the "Blue Eyes". Together they try and find "Spirit Waves" that might help to combat an alien species that has invaded and all but taken over the Earth. The movie sports a pretty well written story which sticks to the fantasy world the games are known for, but is not based off any game.
